September 8, 2010: Amalfi Coast Tour

Today was the first real rainy day that we had. There isn't really too much to do inside in this area, so we decided to take the bus to Positano, a city on the Amalfi Coast.

We had a late start (for us), since we were just beat from yesterday. This meant that we had to deal with the tourist crowds for the first time. We walked over to the train station in Sorrento to catch the bus. There were about 50 people in line already, so we waited...when the first bus arrived, the people in front of us were the last ones able to get on. While this was frustrating, it actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise. When the next bus arrived we got to sit in the very front seats on the right side of the bus - the best to get the views of the coastline.

As the bus traveled from Sorrento to Positano, we couldn't believe our eyes. Looking up at the cliffs was just as amazing as looking down at the coast and the various shades of blue water (even though it was gray and cloudy). We could only imagine what it looked like on a bright sunny day. Since we had such primo seats, we decided to stay on the bus until Amalfi - a few towns "down the road". Please understand that this tour took over 2 hours - a coach bus driving down the coast on a narrow road barely wide enough for two lanes that looks over a cliff - it takes some time...

In Amalfi, we walked around for a bit until we found a place for lunch. There, we met another American couple from DC who had just gotten married in Ireland. Turns out they have relatives in Brooklyn and they told us about the guy who wears a yellow thong speedo and tans in the new park under the Brooklyn Bridge. Something to look forward to when we're back in NY?? Anyway, after lunch, we did a quick tour of the impressive cathedral and then caught a bus back to Positano. We plan to visit Amalfi again tomorrow to meet up with some of Mike's friends from high school (also here on their honeymoon), so we'll check out more of the town then.

Back in Positano, a crazy place where people live on steep cliffs only accessible by stairs, we did a short tour - from the main road, down to the beach, and then back up through town. It really started to rain so we didn't linger - wearing non-breathable rain-gear and climbing steps is not a good combo - and we climbed back to the bus stop. For some reason, the transit agency here refuses to run enough buses during the touristy season to handle the demands. The couple next to us in line had been waiting 1.5 hours and the last 2 buses had passed them by. Luckily, when the next bus came, we were able to get on - and even get a seat. 50 people seated, another 50 standing...it was nuts. We took the bus back to our hotel, grabbed dinner, and went back to go to bed - tomorrow is going to be a long day of hiking in Amalfi.
