September 12, 2010: Sorrento to Sicily

We left Sorrento early this morning for a nearly all-day journey to Sicily. There was a 70 minute subway ride to Napoli, and then a seven-hour train ride to Sicilia. The train ride was great - we hugged to coast for most of the way so we were able to see the never-ending series of beaches. To get to Sicilia, the train got onto a boat, we sailed a short distance from the mainland to the island, and then continued the train ride.

We arrived later in the afternoon in the town of Milazzo - we're just staying here overnight so we can catch an early ferry to Lipari - the main Aeolian Island, where we will have a home base for a few days. There isn't much to do in Milazzo, so we got some snacks for dinner and ate along the tree-lined waterfront. More storm clouds were in the distance so we grabbed some gelato and head back to the hotel.

While there isn't much to do in Milazzo, we are impressed with one thing - the gelato costs half of what it did in Sorrento, and the servings are bigger!

If the weather holds out, we expect to have some pretty amazing pictures from the islands, so stay posted.

Gelato Gusti per il Giorno:
Mike - Cioccolato e pistacchio (chocolate and pistachio)
Aviva - Gianduia e pistacchio (a hazelnutty chocolate and pistachio)
